Maintaining Food Safety

Plasma Blue can help food safety through its technology. For food processors, maintaining food safety is critical for operations. Foodborne illness from contaminated food products is a leading concern for these facilities. Food processors have developed protocols to minimize contamination by foodborne pathogens (i.e., listeria, salmonella), contamination is still possible.

One significant factor enabling foodborne illness is the presence of biofilms on surfaces at these facilities. Biofilms are difficult to remove and can be resistant to disinfectants. This resistance reduces the effectiveness of cleaning and sanitation protocols, which can allow pathogens to remain on the surface of equipment and throughout manufacturing facilities. The challenge for food processors is that there are few effective, commercial solutions for biofilm removal, meaning contamination and foodborne illness remains a risk.

Our Technology Can Help

Plasma Blue’s technology is positioned to address this gap, as its plasma activated water (PAW) has been shown to be a highly effective disinfectant. When the unit applies cold plasma to water, it generates a mix of short-lived free radicals reactive (i.e., hydrogen peroxide). It also generates free electrons that not only kill bacteria, including human pathogens, but also attack the biofilm structure. This allows the removal of biofilms and reduces foodborne illness by limiting the contamination of food by human pathogens.

The use of PAW in food production is a new developing industry. With PAW, food process facilities will gain better control of contamination without the use of added chemicals, making the process safer.
