Plasma activated water

Plasma Activated Water (PAW) is a technology using plasma to modify water's properties and create a solution with reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (RONS). Based on literature, plasma discharges in water, with air or oxygen and creates sources of reactive species, such as hydroxyl radicals, atomic oxygen, ozone, nitric oxide radicals, excited nitrogen and hydrogen peroxide. Plasma Blue's system also reduces the Ph of the water down to a range of 2.7- 3. This activated water has some positive effects for various applications like agriculture and biomedical fields.

Plasma Blue developed a technology to help control harmful bacteria and viruses, which cause disease on farms. The unit produces PAW for use on pens, stalls and cages, equipment, floors, water systems, etc. Early tests indicate that PAW can reduce viruses and bacteria on surfaces by >99%. Reducing bacteria and viruses ensures fewer opportunities for animal infection (Figure 2). In addition to generating PAW, the unit treats contaminated water directly. Treating water kills harmful bacteria or viruses, thus reducing diseases spread through water.

Sanitation in animal production

Hygiene is critical in livestock management, as it maintains a healthy environment for animals, ensuring their health, wellbeing and productivity while protecting consumers and the people who care for them.

Today, sanitization of living spaces, facilities, equipment, water, etc. requires two steps: cleaning and disinfection. Cleaning removes debris, like manure and dirt, while disinfection kills harmful bacteria and viruses. The use of Plasma Blue can reduce the use of chemicals for sanitation.

Sanitation is important to modern farming operations, which have seen increased animal densities. Increased density makes the risk of spreading of infection easier and faster. Controlling disease spread is critical in preventing animal death and maintaining animal productivity. Finally, animal infections can spread quickly. Cost-effective, proactive treatment remains the best option for control.

to sterilize nutrient solutions and substrate. This is particularly important for hydroponics, as the substrate can be reused over several seasons, depending on the crop rotation. Additionally, this approach could be utilized during the growing season to reduce pathogen populations in the root zone. Important in seed production and regular veggie production. PAW can also be used to clean the irrigation system of algae. PAW, when applied at a proper rate, can reduce pathogen activity on the plant surface as a contact fungicide. It has similar properties to chlorothalonil, mancozeb, or other copper-based products, such as copper hydroxide and copper oxide. This could greatly benefit organic production and could be used as a preventive measure several times during the season.

Targeting root pathogens before transplanting. In some intensive productions where three or four crops can be grown per season, crop rotation concerning the life cycle of soil pathogens is a concern. Here, soil disinfection is standard practice; however, chemical alternatives are very limited and not always permitted in some markets. Plasma-activated water could provide a viable alternative in eradicating pathogens without leaving chemical residues in our soils.

Improving germination and killing pathogens. Depending on seed type, this could be a valuable tool. For wet seeds, such as watermelons, tomatoes, cucumbers, and melons, it could serve as a powerful alternative to routine seed disinfection. Additionally, the water used for cleaning can also be treated to reduce the risk of pathogens such as Fusarium, mosaic yellow virus, Xanthomonas, Clavibacter, etc. In the seed industry, there are instances where water used for seed cleaning has caused surface contamination or contributed to the rejection of seed lots. Plasma-activated water might be a viable option.

For seed treatment of dry seeds, such as brassicas and carrots, plasma-activated water at very low rates can be used to destroy pathogens, including Alternaria, Fusarium, Botrytis, Sclerotinia, and rust. Decreasing the use of copper-based products can also decrease germination.

Plasma water will serve as a free residual alternative to control pathogens in both wet and dry seeds. Please consider that plasma-activated water should eliminate algae, bacteria, and fungi, which is comparable to copper products used for this purpose, although not permitted in organic practices.

Plasma activated water can be used to clean greenhouse structures after crop production, including seed plants and cleaning facilities, crop equipment, etc., but without using chemicals with long residual effects.

It could be used to treat fruit before packaging, such as apples, berries, cherries, and sugarbeets, for tomato paste. This could significantly decrease the use of disinfectants before consumers, leaving no residue in fruit and food-grade vegetables. This is very important in California and Latin America in general.
